UsableType: Oft Asked Questions

Why don't some pages in the site validate?

Our search results pages do not currently validate. We are looking into a new standards compliant search application to rectify this problem.

Why call the site UsableType and then lower font sizes below 100% of the users default? That’s not very usable!

We choose to lower font sizes below the default for a number of reasons.

  1. The majority of sites on the web do this. It is now the norm, and is expected by users whether they are aware of it or not. Users not wanting this style forced upon them are free to create a user style sheet which overides it.
  2. Text is more comfortable to read on the majority of browsers and screen resolutions at the slightly smaller size. If not it is easily resized by the browsers text zoom control.

Who designed the UsableType site?

UsableType was designed by Andrew Hume in June 2004.

What CMS are you using?

UsableType is powered by the classy Wordpress.

Isn’t that blog software?

It’s marketed (in the non-commercial sense) as such, but it’s an extremely flexible bit of kit. It is easy to unravel and stick back together as required, and suits us very well. The wordpress community, headed by Matt Mullenweg provides great support too.

Can I write an article for UsableType?

By all means, yes! We are always looking for articles concerning any aspect of web typography. See the Write an Article page for further details.

I have found a mistake in your guides. Do I get a cash prize?

Congratulations—but no cash prize. We do on occasions make mistakes, and sometimes those mistakes slip through to our finished articles. If you are aware of erronious or out-of-date information on UsableType please let us know. Without the help of our readers UsableType would wither and die… rapidly.
